Description

The Falcon Hotel, located at 9 Cornmarket on the south side, is a hotel that dates from the late 17th century and was refronted in the late 18th century. It features a render over a timber frame, a gabled old tile roof, and brick end stacks. The building has a double-depth plan with three storeys and a four-window range. The entrance has 20th-century double doors set within a mid-19th century classical stone porch. To the left, there is a late 18th century tripartite sash window framed in a moulded wood architrave, while a window to the right is blocked. The first floor has similar 12-pane sashes and the second floor features 9-pane sashes, all set in moulded wood architraves. Inside, there is a late 17th or early 18th century coved plaster cornice. A gabled dormer contains an 18th century two-light casement window with wrought-iron fittings.

To the right, there is a late 18th century two-storey, three-bay extension that has a render over brick, a gabled old tile roof, and a brick end stack. This extension features segmental arches over three mid-19th century horned 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and two late 18th century twelve-pane sashes on the first floor. The interior includes a mid-19th century staircase with turned balusters and mock panelling, as well as mid-19th century panelled doors. The first floor reveals exposed late 17th century wall plates and studs, along with a late 17th century three-bay queen-post roof with clasped purlins.

The Falcon Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 5 (consecutive), The Little Market House, Guildhall, and premises occupied by Midland Bank.
