Description

9, 10, 11, and 12 Green East Road are terraced cottages that were formerly workers' housing, built in 1920 by Fred Rowntree for the Quaker Trust. The cottages have brick walls, tile roofs, and wooden windows, including sashes and casements, along with plank exterior doors.

The layout consists of four attached cottages, with No. 9 projecting to the north end, creating an overall L-shaped plan. The facades of Nos. 10, 11, and 12 feature a pitched roof with a one-storey-plus-attic design, including projecting attic gables for each cottage and a central window on the first floor. No. 9 has a two-storey gable roof that is hipped at the front, with prominent chimneys. The windows are wood flush-framed, multi-paned sashes, and casements.

The interior has not been inspected but is believed to be plain, reflecting their original use as workers' cottages. The cottages directly face the 1919 Village Green, which is at the heart of the village of Jordans.

The construction of Jordans village, envisioned as an ideal planned community for Quakers, began in 1919 based on designs by Fred Rowntree from 1916. This terrace is part of a group with other surviving terraces around the Village Green, originally built for workers at Jordans Village Industries. These cottages are listed for their contribution to the group value of the historically significant Jordans village and as a range of mostly unaltered and well-designed workers' housing.
