Description

The Congreve Monument is a small stone obelisk, dating from around 1737 and possibly designed by Kent. It features a trophy of comic masks and is topped by a monkey that is believed to be holding a mirror. This monument was erected by Lord Cobham in memory of his friend, the playwright Congreve. It is situated on a small island in the Octagon Lake at Stowe School.
