Description

Buttermilk Hall is a house dating from the mid 17th century, with repairs made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of thin brick, primarily in stretcher bond, and features a first floor band course and brick pilasters. It has a coursed rubble stone plinth with moulded brick coping. The southwest wing and northwest side have been largely rebuilt in 19th and 20th century brick, with some areas whitewashed. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, and there is a thin brick chimney with a pilaster at the center of the northeast range.

The house has an H-plan layout with a short central bar and is one storey with an attic. The northeast side has two and a half bays, with a central half-bay that was originally a lobby entry, now featuring a projection with a rebuilt semi-circular gable. The windows are leaded casements, all replaced in the 20th century. The ground floor includes a cross casement with a segmental head to the left, another in a blocked doorway at the center, and a 4-light transomed casement to the right. The attic has paired casements, with those in the outer bays located in eaves-line dormers that have rebuilt brick gables. There is a 20th century door in a central recess on the southeast side.

An attached timber frame and weatherboard outbuilding at the rear wing has been incorporated into the house. Inside, the property features stop-chamfered spine beams and a moulded stone fireplace with a 4-centred arch.
