Description

Further Pegs is a house built around 1920 by Fred Rowntree for his son, Douglas, with some alterations made in the later 20th century. The house is constructed of thin red brick in stretcher bond and features a plain tile roof with brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with a rear outshut under a catslide roof and consists of five bays, including a small single-storey bay on the left. Designed in the Arts and Crafts style, the house has asymmetrically-placed windows of various sizes, mostly 12-pane sashes with exposed boxes, oak sills, and header-brick arches.

The central entrance features a six-panel door, which is now part-glazed, flanked by narrow sidelights separated by reeded pilasters. These are topped with a frieze and cornice. The first-floor windows extend through the eaves, which are boxed, and there are kneelers present. A wide ridge stack is located between the left bays.

At the rear, there is a wide external gabled chimney on the left, adorned with blue-brick diaper-work, a small four-pane inglenook window, and a two-flue stack rising on the right. A small four-light larder window is found in the fourth bay, with a stair window above in the gable and flanking windows. On the right return, there are two sashes on the ground floor, a tripartite sash above, and a small four-pane window in the gable. The left return has a window on the left and, on the right, inside the single-storey bay, there is the original strap-hinged board back door, with a tripartite sash above.

Inside, the sitting room features an inglenook fireplace with a timber bressumer, a circular brick hood and inner flue, a bracketed mantlepiece, and a cupboard to the side. The house has panelled doors and cupboards throughout, some of which date from the late 20th century. A simple wooden balustrade is present on the stair. Further Pegs is a well-designed Arts and Crafts house by Fred Rowntree and is part of the idealistically-founded Jordans community.
