Description
Windmill, a smock-mill built in the mid to late 17th century, was restored in the 1970s. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding, which has been strengthened and covered with a weatherboarded outer skin from the 20th century. The base, made of early 19th-century brick, is octagonal with sloping sides and stands four storeys tall. The base includes two board doors and two paired wooden casements, and it is partly below ground level. The upper floors have barred wooden windows on two opposite sides, resembling raking dormers, and there are two board doors leading to the first floor. The revolving cap is equipped with four wooden sails from the 20th century, while the fantail is currently being restored. Inside, the frame features large, roughly curved braces between the cant posts. The main machinery is intact, including the main drive shaft, wallower, spur wheel, windshaft, and brake wheel, with the wheel spokes morticed into the shafts. There are two sets of millstones housed in a rebuilt casing, along with the original tentering gear. The shoots, bins, and flour dressers have been rebuilt and sourced from elsewhere. It is noted that the mill was moved from its original site at Chesham in 1821, according to a Chiltern Society leaflet from 1973.
