Description
Nos 1 to 9 on High Street in Amersham is a former Grammar School from the 16th century, which was refaced in the 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features an old tiled roof with a parapet and a gable at No 9, although it has been refronted in modern brick. It stands two storeys tall, with shop windows at Nos 3, 7, and 9. No 1 has a half-glazed door on the right, a three-light casement window on the left, and another three-light casement on the first floor, all with segmental arches. The doorway to No 5, dating from the 19th century, has a stone arched head inscribed with "Grammar School" and "1624" in the tympanum. The first floor of Nos 5 and 7 features two large mullion and transom casements, along with a small unbarred sash window between them. No 9 has a modern three-light leaded casement on the first floor and a two-light casement in the attic, both with segmental arches. The rear elevation facing the churchyard has four gables, with the gable at No 1 being timber framed with brick infill.
