Description

The Old Wycombe Union School building, located at Bledlow Homes, is a former workhouse and school that was last used as a children's home. It dates from the late 18th century and early 19th century. The building is constructed of red and vitreous brick and features dentil eaves and hipped tile roofs. It has a U-shaped plan, with the far wing likely being older than the long side wings.

The building is two storeys high. The far wing consists of five bays and has been altered; it includes two 3-light barred wooden casements on the left side of the ground floor, two similar casements on the first floor, and two blind windows on the right side of the ground floor. The ground floor openings have segmental heads made of vitreous brick, and there are central double doors with a segmental head and a white painted brick surround.

The side wings have seven bays each. The left wing features paired barred wooden casements on the first floor, while the ground floor windows are boarded up. The left bay is irregular, with a board door in a wide opening on the ground floor and a 20th-century glazed door above. There is another board door between the second and third bays, leading to a passage between the right bays. All ground floor openings have cambered heads. The right wing is also irregular, with altered windows, some of which are blind and others fitted with 20th-century casements.

In front of the courtyard, there is a brick dwarf wall with cast iron railings and stone steps leading to a gate on the left. There are also 20th-century extensions on the sides, including a single-storey pebbledashed wing at the rear.
