Description
The Old Latin School is a former school-house, now a dwelling, that was documented in 1668 with some alterations from the 18th century. It was founded by William Elmer of Grange Farmhouse, which is located opposite. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone, featuring a plinth, rough quoins, and timber lintels above the openings. It has an old tile roof and end stacks.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and consists of five bays. It has leaded casements, with three-light windows in the outer bays and two-light windows in the inner bays and above the door on the porch. There is a flat stone arch over the lower right-hand window. The building includes two gabled dormers with bargeboards and diagonally leaded paired casements in the inner bays.
The centre bay features a two-storey gabled porch with a 19th-century six-panelled door, which is set back under a segmental moulded arch, and a string course at the impost level. Additionally, there is a central clock turret with pointed arched lights and a leaded ogee cap on a bracketed cornice. A modern extension has been added to the rear of the building.
