Description

18 and 19 Castle Street are a pair of houses that have been converted into flats, a shop, and a restaurant. They were built in the late 18th century and underwent alterations in 1889 when they were transformed into a store, with further changes in the 20th century when they were re-divided. The exterior features pebbledashed render over brick, with cemented dressings, a slate roof, and rendered ridge and end stacks.

The building has a double-depth plan and rises three stories with a six-window range. At each end of the 1889 shop front, there are six-panel doors with rectangular fanlights of different patterns, panelled reveals, and pilastered wood surrounds. A continuous moulded cornice runs over the doors and shop front, featuring a pediment above the central bay and a timber balcony with turned balusters.

To the right of the centre on the first floor, there are a pair of tripartite sash windows, and another pair on the second floor, all with moulded wood surrounds. Above ground floor level, there is cemented decoration of rusticated quoins, a square panel between the tripartite sashes, and a large central panel that frames a monogram with the initials V A, along with a cartouche above it bearing the date 1889. The building is topped with a deep, bracketed wood eaves cornice. It was formerly known as Vyles, which was considered "the nearest thing to a department store the town has ever had."
