Description
Monks Risborough War Memorial is a war memorial located on Mill Lane in Princes Risborough. Designed by J. W. Killer of Aylesbury, it is made of granite and features a wheel-headed cross adorned with Celtic knotwork decoration. The cross stands on an inscribed pedestal, which is set atop three rusticated steps.
The front face of the pedestal bears the inscription:
1914-1918
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVERLASTING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR
This is followed by the names of 24 local men who were killed in action. Below this, the inscription reads:
GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS
The second side of the memorial lists the Colonial forces and includes a roll of honour for the years 1939-1945. The third side also contains a roll of honour.
The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on November 13, 1921, by the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, The Marquis of Lincolnshire, with the dedication conducted by the Rural Dean, Rev. V. L. Whitchurch. Despite its relatively plain design, the memorial holds significant historical interest, linking the local community to major world events, which is why it is listed at grade II.
