Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on High Street in Long Crendon. It features a nave, south aisle, crossing, and chancel dating from the 13th century, with a north aisle and transept added in the 14th century. The upper part of the central tower, which has high turrets, along with the chancel roof, west porch, and a later west window, were constructed in the 15th or 16th century. The church has a cruciform plan with a two-bay nave, which has a quatre-foil pier on the north side and an octagonal pier on the south. The north transept window is decorated with tracery and was replicated in the 19th century in the east window of the chancel. There is a decorated niche in the north aisle and a carved octagonal font from the 14th century. The church also contains a 17th-century wooden screen in the transepts and a 17th-century communion rail. In the south transept, there is a large wall monument dedicated to Sir John Dormer and his wife, dated 1626. This monument features recumbent effigies on an elaborate double-tiered plinth, set within a shallow coffered arch topped by a pediment and cartouche, supported by black columns and flanked by obelisks with strapwork decoration in the lunette.
