Description

Bevan's War Memorial is located in the Northfleet Cement Works and was erected after the First World War. It was designed by Francis William Doyle-Jones, who lived from 1873 to 1938.

The memorial is made of concrete and features a seated figure of Britannia in the Art Deco style. She is depicted in robes and armor, wearing a crested helmet, with her cloak draped over the back of her throne. Britannia sits upright, gazing directly forward, with her forearms resting on the throne's arms. The throne is set on a cubed plinth that displays a bronze plaque on the front. The plaque bears the inscription: 'GREAT WAR 1914-1918/EMPLOYEES OF BEVANS WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/(names)/THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE', listing the names and occupations of the fallen. The plinth is supported by a two-tier square concrete base.

The cement works were founded by Thomas Bevan in the late 19th century. This memorial commemorates the employees of Bevan's cement works who lost their lives during the First World War. Doyle-Jones is also known for designing the bronze Partick and Whiteinch War Memorial in Victoria Park, Glasgow, completed in 1922.

War memorials are significant for their historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels. This memorial is a striking example of an Art Deco design made of concrete, serving to honor the employees of the Northfleet Cement Works who died in World War I.
