Description

The Northfleet War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1923. It is constructed from Portland stone and includes a bronze sword. The monument has an octagonal plan.

It stands 20 feet high and comprises a deep, octagonal plinth with a moulded base, set upon two octagonal steps. This is topped by an elongated Latin cross, with Celtic proportions, whose shaft and arms are also octagonal. A bronze longsword points downwards, affixed to the front of the cross. The plinth is inscribed with the names of 205 local men who died during the First World War. The upper step bears the inscription "IN LOVING AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTHFLEET WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE".
