Description
This barn, located approximately 10 meters south-east of East Rackenthwaite, likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has been altered and extended over time. It is constructed from sandstone rubble arranged in courses, featuring large quoins and a stone slate roof. The barn has a rectangular six-bay layout oriented east-west and faces south, with a significant lean-to addition on the west half of the south side.
On the south side, the fourth bay includes a segmental-headed wagon doorway with rubble voussoirs and a stone slate drip-band, while the last bay has a small square window. The rear of the barn features a smaller doorway in the fourth bay, a stable door in the fifth bay, a loading door in the third bay, and a low blocked doorway in the first bay.
Inside, there are five principal-rafter roof trusses with angle struts, primarily made from reused timbers, likely crucks. The roof also has two sets of trenched overlapped purlins and some original rafters. This barn is part of a group with East Rackenthwaite Farmhouse.
