Description

Manor House is a house dated 1691 and 1723, possibly built for the Symondson family. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and two bays, with quoins at the corners. The central entrance features a glazed six-panel door in a chamfered surround, topped by an arched date plaque with raised lettering that reads "S". Above the door, there is a flat stone hood supported by brackets.

The house has recessed chamfered mullion windows with four lights on both the ground and first floors; the ground floor windows have king mullions and hood moulds. The gables are adorned with shaped kneelers and gable copings, while the end stacks are corniced. At the rear, there is a central inserted doorway, with the original blocked doorway now serving as a window to the right, featuring a lintel with raised letters that read "I M 1691". The rear also has recessed chamfered windows, and the stair window, located left of centre, includes a mullion and transom.

Inside, there is a large segmental-arched fireplace on the ground floor to the left, with the arch made up of a keystone and two flanking stones carved as voussoirs. The jambs of the fireplace are decorated with two fielded panels, and the oven on the right side now opens into the rear kitchen. The house was originally designed as a direct-entry plan, but a partition was inserted in the living room to create a narrow entrance passage, likely in the early 19th century. The house may have been built by a member of the prominent Symondson family from the 17th century, but the current owners have family ties to the Tennants.
