Description

The George Inn is a former vicarage that has been converted into an inn. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, which is painted, and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has two storeys and five windows on the first floor.

The entrance is located to the right of the center and has long and short quoined jambs. There is a board door on the far left without jambs and a slight lintel, as well as an inserted glazed door to the right. The windows throughout the building are flat-faced mullion windows, with three, two, and two lights on the ground floor and two lights on the first floor. A ridge stack is positioned between the second and third first-floor windows, and between the fourth and fifth. The right bay is slightly set back and leads to a 20th-century extension, which is not of special interest.

At the rear, which faces the road, there are two two-light windows and one three-light window similar to those at the front. A Victorian letterbox is set into the wall on the left return. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey. The original house is likely defined by the chimney stacks, with the left bay possibly serving as a byre or stable, dating back to the rebuilding of the bridge in 1734. The building became an inn in the early 19th century, managed by the parish clerk or churchwarden, and it belonged to the church.
