Description

The building is a former workers' barracks for railway navvies, dating from the late 1860s, constructed during the building of the Settle and Carlisle branch of the Midland Railway between 1866 and 1875. It is made of mixed random rubble with remnants of whitewash, featuring sandstone quoins and dressings, and has a slate roof with chimneys made of blue engineering brick. The structure has a rectangular single-depth plan oriented north-south, facing the railway track to the east, and is divided into two halves. The northern half contains an office and a store, while the southern half is an open barrack room with a central chimney stack.

The exterior is low, with a total of four windows arranged as 2:2. The barracks room on the left has a central doorway flanked by windows, while the other half has two windows and two doorways. The doorways are square-headed and full-height, featuring chamfered lintels painted red and board doors. The windows are oblong with red sandstone quoining on the jambs, chamfered sills, and lintels (also painted red), and have 8-pane fixed glazing. Each half of the building has a ridge chimney at the center, and the south gable wall includes a window similar to those at the front.

Inside, the barracks room features a massive rectangular free-standing chimney stack in the center, with iron bar grates at both the north and south ends. There are some remnants of wooden benches attached to the walls, a square window opening in the partition wall leading to the office, and an unceiled common rafter roof. This building is a rare example of navvy living quarters, as other known examples have been significantly altered. It forms a group with the Old Station and the Passenger Waiting Room at Dent Station, both located approximately 150 meters to the northwest.
