Description
There are two chest tombs located approximately 5 metres south of the Church of St. Mary, dating from the mid-18th century and made of sandstone. The northern tomb features a cyma moulded top slab with worn lettering that reads: "Here lieth the Body of Richard Constantine who departed this life September the 15th 1746 and in the 63rd year of his Age. Jane ye wife of the above Ric.d. died Fbr. ye 21st 1755." The southern tomb has an incised line and roll moulding on the top slab, with well-preserved sharply cut lettering stating: "Here lieth the Body of Thos. Son of Jonathan & Margaret Constantine who died Fbr. ye 25th 1745 in the 18th Year of His Age. The above Margaret died Janr. ye 28th 1727-8. Also the Body of the above Jonathan Who died May 17th 1768 Aged 73." Both tombs have solid stone bases. Henry Constantine was one of the 13 tenants of the manor of Conistone who purchased his holding after 1583, and they may have lived at the Old Hall.
