Description

This is a late 17th or early 18th century farmhouse, now a house, with a barn attached to its west side, located south of Hawes Road, Garsdale. The house is built of roughly coursed sandstone rubble, with the front grey-washed, and has a stone slate roof. It follows a roughly east-west axis with a continuous, shallow, full-height outshut extending along the road-facing side. The plan is of two main rooms.

The front of the house has two storeys and three widely-spaced windows. A wide, gabled porch is centrally located, with a square-headed outer opening, triangular pigeon holes with stone slate ledges, a stone flagged roof, side benches, and an inner square-headed doorway with a board door. To the left of the porch is a rectangular window and a small fire-window, both with altered glazing. A pair of square nine-pane windows are on the right, the first with a top-hung casement and the second fixed, with a drip band over the pair. The upper floor has a narrow window and a square nine-pane fixed window to the left, offset slightly to the right of those below; the latter has one opening pane in the top right corner. A small square four-pane fixed window is to the right (the right upper pane opening). A corbelled chimney is at the left gable, and a gable chimney is to the right. The rear has a low outshut under a catslide roof with four small rectangular windows, including a stair-window. The interior was not inspected but likely contains features of historical interest.

The barn range extends to the left, constructed in two phases, with a quoined junction separating them. The longer section adjoining the house has two doorways at ground floor, and one square and one rectangular opening leading to the loft. The shorter portion to the west has external stone steps leading to a loft doorway (now lacking a deck and door), two stable doors to the right and a doorway to the left (door damaged). The rear of the barn has a narrow outshut in the centre, with a blocked doorway. The interior of the barn has three collar trusses in the eastern portion, and original lateral stalls or boskins in the western portion.
