Description
Millscar House is a house dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with railings from the early 19th century, located on the north side of Village Street in Newbiggin. The house is constructed of roughcast rubble with a stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan, arranged over two storeys and with an attic, and comprises three bays. The central doorway features six fielded panels set within an ashlar doorcase, characterised by pilaster bases and capitals, rounded inner corners to the lintel, moulded architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice. Sash windows are set within ashlar surrounds. The gables feature shaped kneelers, and the roof is finished with ashlar coping. Ashlar end stacks include moulded bases and dripmoulds. Single-storey extensions on either side are not of particular interest. The rear of the house has an ashlar quoined doorway with a moulded arris, a two-light flat-faced mullion window, and a round-arched landing window, the latter with an ashlar surround incorporating imposts and a keystone. A window is present in the left return gable, and a casement window in a double-chamfered ashlar surround is in the right return gable. In front of the house are wrought-iron spiked railings and a matching gate, both with urn finials on the standards. The railings are supported by ashlar gate piers, slightly chamfered, with ogee caps.
