Description
The Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, built in 1851 by A B Higham, is located on Hawes Gruel Street. This church is constructed of rubble with a Westmorland slate roof and is designed in the Decorated style. It features a west tower, a nave with aisles, and north and south porches, along with a chancel that includes a south vestry. The building has quoins and the tower consists of three stages with offset diagonal buttresses. There is a clock on the second stage and two-light belfry openings on the third stage, along with a stair turret on the southeast corner and a three-light west window. The gabled porch has a chamfered pointed arch.
The nave has five bays with offset buttresses and three-light windows, and there are copings and a chimney at the east end. The chancel has two bays, and the vestry is located at the angle between the nave's south aisle and the chancel, featuring a curved wall with a two-light mullion window and a four-light east window. Inside, the church has five-bay arcades supported by tall Early English-style piers and double-chamfered arches, along with double-chamfered arches for the tower and chancel. Some monuments predate the church, including one over the north door with a Latin inscription commemorating Reverend Charles Udal, who died in 1782 and served as priest at Hawes from 1750 to 1781, erected by his pupils. There is also a parish bier at the back of the church, and the furniture dates from around 1930 and later, made by Thompson of Kilburn. This church replaced a smaller one that was situated closer to the road.
