Description
The Village Institute, originally built as a Sandemanian chapel around 1755, is located in Gayle. Constructed from rubble with a stone slate roof, it is a single-storey building featuring three windows. There is a board door to the right and 20th-century casement windows, along with six-pane windows on the rear elevation. The chapel was established by the Batty brothers and James Allen of Gayle as an Inghamite chapel, but they soon became followers of Robert Sandeman, who separated from the Scottish Church. Adjacent to the chapel is a burial ground that contains well-lettered tombstones from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
