Description
The White Hart Hotel is an 18th-century hotel located on Gruel Street in Hawes. It is constructed of coursed rubble with a stone slate roof and features three storeys with a four-bay façade, followed by a two-bay section. The building has chamfered rusticated quoins. In the second bay, there is a door with six fielded panels beneath a late 17th-century lintel that has decorative moulding. The fourth bay contains another door with six fielded panels set in an 18th-century moulded surround, which includes paterae, a frieze inscribed "WHITE HART INN," and a cornice. The windows are sash style and set in ashlar surrounds, with the second floor windows being shorter. There are chimney stacks at both ends and between the second and third bays. A bell is attached to the wall below the second-floor window in the second bay. On the rear elevation, there is a round-arched staircase window. Inside, there is an 18th-century turned-baluster staircase.
