Description
High Smithy Holme is a farmhouse and byre built under one roof in the early 18th century. It features coursed rubble and a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and three first-floor windows. The right-hand bay is of higher quality than the others, with higher eaves, better stone, and more refined ashlar dressings, including quoins. This bay contains the entrance, which has a board door and a window above, both set in ashlar surrounds. Between the other two bays, there is a board door beneath a deep lintel and a floating weathercourse. The square windows in bay one and the fire-windows in bay two have stone surrounds. The byre on the left has quoins at the left end, projecting through-stones, and two doorways with ashlar surrounds; the left doorway has a board door while the right one is blocked. This building is believed to have been the home of Anthony Clarkson, who prepared all of the tithe maps for Swaledale.
