Description
Barbon Manor is a house built between 1862 and 1863 by E.M. Barry for Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth, designed in the French Renaissance style. The structure is made of rock-faced limestone with sandstone ashlar dressings on a basement featuring channeled rustication, topped with a swept hipped slate roof adorned with fishscale bands. The south facade consists of two storeys, a basement, and an attic, arranged in four bays. The basement is battered and has a roll mould over it, while the ground floor features an enriched cast iron balcony and cornice. The first floor includes a sill course and entablature. The windows have ashlar surrounds, splat balustrading on the aprons, and are sashed with single glazing bars and horns; the ground floor windows include French doors. The attic has round-headed dormer windows with hoods and lead-clad roofs.
The east end of the house is bowed and has three bays with similar details, including a recessed bay on the north side that features a spiral fire escape. The west end has two bays, with the first bay being roughcast and recessed, while the second bay contains tripartite windows. The north facade has three bays and a ground floor sill course. The central first floor tripartite window has a frieze above it inscribed with "KYND KYNN KNAWNE KEPE." The porch features an entrance with an overlight and flanking lights, paired panelled doors, a keystone with the letter 'S', a cornice, and a splat balustrade with a central armorial bearing and ball finials. There are two stacks with moulded caps. Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth, who lived from 1804 to 1877, was a notable figure in Manchester, recognized for his contributions to education and medical issues.
