Description

A pair of cottages with attached animal houses and hay lofts above, dating to the early 18th century, with alterations and enlargements made in the early 19th century. The cottages are built of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and have a stone slate roof with kneelers. The front elevation has a pair of doorways with plain ashlar surrounds and plank doors, flanked by single 2-light sliding sash windows in plain ashlar surrounds. Beyond these are single doorways leading to the animal houses, with plank doors. Above are two glazing bar sash windows in plain ashlar surrounds, with a small hay loft opening to the left. Side gable walls also feature hay loft openings with plain ashlar surrounds. The rear front has a pair of segment-headed windows, now blocked, in plain ashlar surrounds, and above are two small windows, also with plain ashlar surrounds. The interior contains two fireplaces with plain ashlar surrounds and brackets supporting stone bressemer beams, and two stone spiral staircases. The cottages were used by lead workers during the 19th century.
