Description

Elbeck Farmhouse and Cottage is a house dated 1707, constructed from limestone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. It has two storeys and three bays, with an additional bay on the right and converted outbuildings to the left, which are not of special interest. The central gabled two-storey porch features a board door on the left, which has chamfered quoined jambs and a stepped chamfered lintel with relief lettering that reads "I.E. 1707." To the right of the door is a recessed chamfered two-light mullion window, which is under a continuous hoodmould. Above this, there is a similar stepped three-light window. The ground floor has similar windows with hoodmoulds, originally consisting of two (now one), four (now two), and four (now three) lights; the left-hand windows have continuous hoodmoulds, lowered chamfered sills, and flat-faced mullions on the second window. The first floor features rectangular windows in plain surrounds, and there are also rectangular windows on the ground floor to the right. A large ridge stack is located to the right of the porch. Inside, a narrow entrance passage in the porch leads to the main living room, which may have originally housed the staircase in the porch room to the right. The main living room contains a large segmental-arched fireplace with a tripartite stone arch, and the flanking stones are inscribed to resemble joggled voussoirs.
