Description

The building known as the Barn opposite Crag Lea is a barn dating from the mid to late 17th century, with an extension added in the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed grey gritstone and rubble, topped with a graduated stone slate roof. The barn consists of four bays and features quoins.

On the north side, there is an original byre door located at the far right, which has chamfered quoined jambs and a three-centred arch above the lintel. The right quoins of this doorway also serve as the building's quoins. The central and left bays have been adapted to form a cart entrance porch and calf boxes, all covered by a cat-slide roof. To the left of the porch are two boarded doors with tie-stone jambs, and there is a projecting, reset, blocked doorway from the 17th century to the left inside the cart porch. The right side features bulbous kneelers and gable coping.

At the rear, there is an inserted winnowing door with plain jambs and a lintel to the left of the center, along with a loading door beneath the eaves in the center, which has a reused 17th-century chamfered surround. The right return showcases finely jointed rubble masonry with through stones, and there is a small mucking out door to the left of center.

Inside, the barn contains two fine king-post trusses and one collar beam truss.
