Description
This lime kiln, located approximately 20 metres north-west of Gibbs Hall Farmhouse, dates from the 1840s and was likely constructed by a professional mason. It has been recently restored and is made of sandstone rubble arranged in courses. The kiln has a square plan, measuring about 4 metres wide and 4.3 metres high, and is built into a slope. Its front and sides are battered, featuring two stepped-back tiers above the draw-hole opening, which is slightly shouldered and has a drip-stone above it. There is a buttress on the left side and a round bowl on top. Inside, the draw hole is barrel-shaped with a flat roof made of large flagstones. This kiln is a good example of its type and forms a group with Gibbs Hall Farmhouse.
