Description

St. James' Hospital Chapel is a chapel associated with the Hospital of St. James, which was the last pilgrimage stop before St. Benet's Abbey. The hospital was founded in 1153, and the chapel was built in the 14th century. It was dissolved in 1539 and later converted into a barn in the late 18th century, with alterations made over time. The building features coursed cut flint with ashlar dressings and some brick repairs, topped by a thatched roof.

The chapel has a rectangular plan and includes diagonal stepped corner buttresses, as well as two stepped side buttresses on the north and south flanks. The west doorway is arched and has a 20th-century door, with a hood mould that is both hollow and wave moulded. Above the doorway is a blocked arched window. The buttresses display flushwork, although those on the north side are in a ruinous condition. There are central segmental-headed barn doors from the 20th century, with a blocked 14th-century window on either side, each featuring a hood mould. A low arched recess to the left has been blocked with brick.

On the south side, there is a small central 20th-century access door flanked by two 14th-century arched windows, similar to those on the north side. The east end window is also blocked, now with a segmental-headed hay loft access door. The gabled roof has 18th-century raised parapets on kneelers. Inside, some 14th-century window embrasures and jambs remain. The roof structure consists of tie beams, principals, two tiers of butt purlins, and curved collars. The chapel is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with a county number of 142.
