Description
Black Mill is an early 19th-century drainage windpump, rebuilt in 1907 by Thomas Smithdale and Sons, with some restoration in 1973 also by the same company. The structure is a three-storey brick tower featuring an unusual entatic batter. It has doors on the north-west and south-east sides, with one blocked window above each door. The remains of a timber petticoat can still be seen. This windpump incorporates early machinery, including a cast iron windshaft and a timber clasp arm brake-wheel. It also has an early cap frame with winding beams and braces, which were used to winch the cap around before fan stage machinery was introduced. A 20th-century turbine is also present.
