Description
Potter Heigham Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thurne, dating from the 14th century, with alterations made in the 15th century and late 18th century. The bridge is constructed of ashlar stone and features a gault brick parapet. It has three arches, with a central semi-circular arch from the 15th century flanked by triangular arches from the 14th century, each of which has four chamfered ribs. Pointed cutwaters are positioned between the arches, below canted pilaster buttresses. Heavy buttresses with roll and wave moulded corbelling were added in the 15th century beyond the triangular arches. The late 18th century gault brick parapet is supported by two sloping buttresses on each side. Both sides of the bridge are identical. The bridge is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
