Description

The double cell at the Dell, located to the north of Goodwood House, is a garden feature dating from around 1730, created for the second Duke of Richmond. It is constructed from rubblestone with a stone rear wall and brick lining, set into an earth bank. There are entrances on each side leading to a curved passage that connects to the two cells. These cells are separated by a brick party wall that has a rectangular opening for communication between them. Each cell features a vaulted roof with a central circular roof-light and triangular-headed lantern niches.

This structure is one of several built around the bowl of a man-made amphitheatre, all part of the second Duke of Richmond's famous menagerie, where it is believed birds or animals were kept.
