WESTHAMPNETT GOODWOOD PARK Double cell at the Dell to north of Goodwood House

Garden feature. Circa 1730, for the second Duke of Richmond. Rubblestone with stone rear wall and brick lining set into earth bank. At each side, an entrance to a curved passage which returns to lead into a cell. The two cells are divided by a brick party-wall with rectangular communicating opening. Each cell has a vaulted roof with central circular roof-light and triangular-headed lantern niches.
This is one of several structures set around the bowl of a man-made amphitheatre and all of which were constructed for the second Duke of Richmond as part of his renowned menagerie. It is believed that birds or animals were kept in it.
