Description

The Stables at Goodwood House are architecturally notable structures built between 1757 and 1763 by Sir William Chambers. They create a complete two-storey courtyard. The east and west facades each feature eight windows, while the south side has twelve windows. The exterior is constructed of squared knapped flints with stone quoins, topped with a wooden eaves cornice that has modillions, and a slate roof. The glazing bars are intact.

On the east side, there is a stone projecting section adorned with a triglyph frieze and a pediment above a large rusticated arch that leads to the carriageway, topped with an octagonal turret featuring a clock. The south side showcases a large gateway flanked by pairs of Doric columns, a moulded frieze, and a wooden superstructure resembling a solid balustrade, although there are no gates at this entrance. Additionally, there are two doorways with cornices above, positioned centrally between the main gateway and the ends of the facade. A photograph of the Stables appeared in Country Life on July 9, 1932.
