Description
The Hermitage at the Dell, located to the north of Goodwood House, is a garden feature built around 1730 for the second Duke of Richmond. It is constructed from rubblestone with stone lining and features a small rectangular light on the right. To the left, there is a curved wall with a plain entrance that leads around to the right into a vaulted cell with curved internal walls and two lantern niches.
This structure is one of several built around the bowl of a man-made amphitheatre, all created for the second Duke of Richmond as part of his famous menagerie, where it is believed that birds or animals were kept.
