Description
The barn at the east side of the yard is a 17th-century aisled barn constructed from stone rubble with brick dressings, featuring a combination of weatherboarding and timber framing, topped with an old tile roof. It consists of six bays and includes pentice lean-tos on the west side and a single aisle on the east. The elevation facing the farm yard has a four-bay pentice on the north side, an off-centre pair of cart doors, and a single bay pentice to the south. Blocked door and window openings on the north-west side below the pentice indicate it may have been used for humble domestic purposes by a cottager or shepherd. The east elevation has three bays of aisle closed with weatherboarding and three bays on the south side that are open. The barn features a gable roof, with part of it weatherboarded. Attached to the south and west are single-storey 'L' plan cart sheds and hovels.
Inside, there is a substantial framed south aisle arcade and roof, with five main aisle posts that have lateral struts connecting to the aisle wall plate. The posts are jowled at the head and feature two lateral struts connecting to the aisle tie-beam, along with a transverse strut marking the tie-beam. Simple Queen post struts are present between the ties and principal rafters, and the barn has a ridgeless roof supported by massive pegged staggered butt purlins. The frame of the barn is largely intact.
