Description

The Ditchling War Memorial is a significant structure made of Portland stone. It features a tall pillar that stands 2.6 meters high and is approximately 0.5 meters square at the base, tapering slightly towards the top. The pillar rests on a plinth that is about 0.5 meters high and 1 meter square, which in turn sits on a base measuring around 0.3 meters high and 1.9 meters square, with moulded edges.

At the top of the east face of the pillar, there is a simple carved cross with an inscription below it that reads: "REMEMBER/ (NAMES)/ 1914 – 1918." The south face of the pillar also features the same carved cross and an inscription that states: "REMEMBER/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945."

Encircling the plinth, starting from the south face, the inscription reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO/ MAN THAN THIS THAT A/ MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS."
