Description

This is a late 16th-century timber-framed building with plaster infilling, known as Anne of Cleves House Wings Place. Although never occupied by Anne of Cleves, it was one of the manors given to her by Henry VIII. The house has an L-shape, with the ground floor of the front partly close-studded and partly rebuilt in red brick. It has a tiled roof and casement windows. The building is two storeys high with an attic. On the front, the west end has its first floor oversailing on a moulded bressummer supported by brackets, above which is a gable with ornamental timbering, carved bargeboards, a pendant, and a cove beneath the gable. A two-tier bay window with five lights per tier is on the ground floor, featuring wooden mullions and transoms. A similar oriel window is on the first floor, also with a cove below. The attic has a four-light window within the gable. The north wing features stone quoins, a gable end with stone coping and finials above the angles, a four-centred brick doorway with a dripstone, and an elaborate Gothic-patterned door. The east wall of the north wing includes a brick chimney breast with offsets on its north side and a pentice on its south side, along with a panel of ornamental timbering on the first floor and external steps leading to a pointed lunette window on the first floor. A 18th-century stone urn sits in the forecourt. Internally, the house retains 16th-century fireplaces, a staircase, and wall paintings.
