Description

The Church of England Cemetery Chapel at Petersfield Cemetery is a cemetery chapel built around 1857 in the Early English style. It has an octagonal plan and is constructed from knapped and squared flints, with stone and yellow brick dressings, topped by a tiled roof featuring a few courses of curved tiles near the top.

The exterior includes an octagonal wooden turret with a trefoil-headed bell opening and a lead-covered battered base, topped with a shingled spire that has an elaborate cross. The windows are alternately designed with trefoils and double trefoil lights, all featuring leaded lights, and are separated by buttresses that divide the bays. A plinth runs along the base of the chapel. There are two gabled projections: the rear has a window, while the front features a porch. The porch is supported by collar beams and wooden brackets, and it has a double door with elaborate cast iron hinges, flanked by wooden seats.

Inside, the chapel has a roof structure with purlins and arched braces that rise to a central octagon. An original bier is reported to be present. The chapel has undergone some alterations but remains a distinctive mid-19th century structure. It is one of a pair of nearly identical cemetery chapels at Petersfield Cemetery, which was opened in 1857 when the local churchyard became full.
