Description

Lancing College Chapel was designed by R H Carpenter in 1868, with William Blackford Woodard, the third son of the founder Nathaniel Woodard, as the Master Builder. The chapel is constructed from stone sourced from the College's quarry at Scaynes Hill in Sussex and is designed in the 13th-century French Gothic style. The above-ground crypt was built between 1871 and 1877 and served as the College Chapel until 1911. In 1882, foundations were laid for a tower at the south-west corner, which was never built. The main part of the chapel was completed in 1911 and features an apse and ten bays, with a central portion flanked by aisles. Great buttresses support the aisle windows, and double flying buttresses connect these buttresses to the walls of the main building. The chapel has a balustrade of pointed arcading and a slate roof. The west wall, featuring a large rose window, was finished between 1960 and 1975 by architect S E Dykes-Bower. The stalls, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1851, were moved here from Eton College Chapel in 1923. Nathaniel Woodard is buried in the chapel in a chantry-like tomb, along with his son, William Woodard.

On the south side, the War Memorial Cloister, designed by Temple Moore, was added between 1920 and 1927. The chapel is a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture.
