Description
This is an L-shaped pair of barns located 20 meters southeast of Grange Farmhouse, dating from the 16th or 17th century. The barns are constructed with a timber frame, clad in weatherboarding and corrugated iron, and feature an iron roof. The side facing the farmhouse has been refronted in brick. One barn runs parallel to the house and consists of six narrow bays, while behind it is a larger six-bay barn, both built during the same period.
The smaller barn has an open end at the hipped end where it connects to the larger barn. There are doors at the half-hipped end of the smaller barn. The main barn includes aisles and midstray doors in the bay next to the smaller barn, which faces away from the courtyard. The main barn has four bays along both sides that were added in the 18th century. The gable end of the main barn has been rebuilt.
Inside, the roof structure features a double tier of ties with braces supporting posts near each end, which lead to a lower purlin. There are curved braces on both sides connecting to the purlin, and above the ties, a queen post truss supports the upper purlin, which has windbracing to the rafters. The aisled large barn has posts on plates resting on brick plinths and a side tie, but lacks a passing brace.
