Description

Restalls is a Grade II* house that was originally three cottages, dating from the 17th century. It was restored and altered in 1905 by W.F. Unsworth, creating a quintessential romantic vernacular cottage, with a later 20th-century extension.

The ground floor features exposed walls with ironstone, including some galletting, at the lower part and brickwork above, supported by buttresses on the lowest side. The upper walls are tile-hung, displaying scalloped bands and canopied sections at three levels. The house has a tile roof with gables, one hipped end, and hipped dormers, as well as an old central shafted stack and an ornamental stack from 1905. It is one storey with an attic and has irregular fenestration with casements that include leaded lights. A deep open porch leads to a massive boarded door.

Inside, the massive stone and brick fireplace from the original lobby-entrance house remains, along with some 17th-century beams. There is also a significant amount of woodwork from 1905 in a similar style, including wide floorboards and wood and ironwork door furniture.

A small later wing is located at the north-west corner. The drop in ground level and the staggered plan on the east side enhance the elevations, with stone walls featuring brick dressings extending into the terraced garden at each end of the house.
