Description
Daintrey House is a Grade II* listed house located on East Street in Petworth. It is considered the finest house in Petworth town after Petworth House itself. Originally built in the 16th century by the Goble family and known as The Mansion, the house features a front dating from the 18th century. It was subdivided at one time but was restored to a single residence during refurbishment from 2006 to 2011.
The house has three storeys and seven windows, constructed of red brick with alternating grey headers. It features a moulded cornice and a parapet with a pediment above the three central window bays, which includes a dummy lunette window. The glazing bars are intact, and the ground and first floor windows have moulded architrave surrounds, with the ground floor windows topped by a wooden cornice that runs across the front in red brick. There is a wide moulded wooden cornice over the first floor.
The main entrance has a doorway with a moulded architrave surround and a pediment above, leading to a door with six fielded panels at the top of three steps. The south wall is marked by two large red brick chimney stacks. The east front, which faces the garden, features a timber-framed gable with red brick infilling, while the rest is made of ashlar from the early 19th century. Inside, the house boasts 16th-century panelling, Petworth marble fireplaces, a plaster ceiling, a wall with panels in the drawing room, and an 18th-century staircase.
