Description
The Leads, Denne Court, Stringer's Hall, and Stringer's Cottage is a large square block that was likely originally two houses but is now divided into four premises. The exterior dates from the 18th century, although part, if not all, of the interior is older. The building has three storeys.
The west front features six windows and one dummy window, constructed of red brick with alternating grey headers. There is a stringcourse of Roman cement above the ground floor, along with a moulded cornice and parapet. Most of the glazing bars are intact. The wide doorway is flanked by a pair of engaged fluted columns in Doric and Ionic styles, with the inner columns slightly recessed. It includes a rectangular fanlight and a door with six fielded panels, accessed by two steps with an iron handrail. To the south of the doorway, there is a small 19th-century shop window.
The south front, which comprises Stringer's Hall and Stringer's Cottage, has four windows and features a mix of red brick with grey headers, red mathematical tiles, and weather-tiles. There are two curved bays on the ground and first floors, each topped with cornices. The glazing bars are intact. The doorway between the bays is adorned with engaged columns, a pediment, a semi-circular fanlight, and a door of six fielded panels, accessed by three steps with an iron handrail.
The north front includes a two-storey projection with three windows (Denne Court). This section is faced with red brick and grey headers on the north side and weather-tiles on the west side. It also features a stringcourse, cornice, and parapet.
