Description

Fox Hall is a hunting lodge built in 1730 for the Duke of Richmond, likely designed by Lord Burlington. The second Duke took over the Charlton Hunt in 1731, which was the most famous pack in England during the 18th century. The third Duke commissioned George Stubbs to paint scenes of the hunt, and the fourth Duke sold the hounds to the Prince Regent in 1813.

The exterior of the building is quite plain, with no indication of its interior character. It has two storeys and an attic with gable ends. There is one window facing west and two window spaces along the south side. The front is cemented with long and short quoins at the ground floor and features a stringcourse. The slate roof has intact glazing bars. The ground floor window is set in a heavy rusticated surround, while the first floor window has a moulded architrave surround with a pediment on consoles. A chimney breast is located on the north wall.

Inside, the ground floor room, believed to be the butler's room, is simple, as are the two small bedrooms in the attic. However, the first floor is more impressive, serving as a piano nobile. It features a grand Palladian room with gilded panelling, an ornate chimney-piece, and a bed recess flanked by closets. The Duke of Richmond would stay here the night before the hunt, which typically began at 8 am. The building is currently managed by the Landmark Trust.
