Description

The Flats, formerly a police station, is a building that dates from 1835 and was originally the Office of the Chief Warden, situated next to the now-demolished Petworth Prison, which was also built in 1835 by James Wyatt. The building is two storeys high and features three windows, constructed of red brick with alternating grey headers. It has long and short window surrounds and quoins made of Roman cement, along with a parapet and blocking course. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, and the glazing bars are intact. Originally, there was a solid porch, but this has been removed, and the doorway behind it has been bricked up. At the time of its listing, it served as the headquarters of the police station, although it is now a subsidiary to the main building, which is a house on the other side of the drive, originally known as Belle Vue House.
