Description

SU 9721 PETWORTH ROSEMARY LANE (formerly listed as 29/380 Grove Lane) The Flats, (former Police Station) II

Police station, now flats. This building originally adjoined Petworth Prison which was built in 1835 on the site of an older building by James Wyatt but has in its turn been demolished. This building also dates from 1835 and was originally the Office of the Chief Warden. When first listed it was the Headquarters of the Police Station but is now only a subsidiary to the main building which is a house on the other side of the drive originally called Belle Vue House. Two storeys. Three windows. Red brick and grey headers alternately. Long and short window surrounds and quoins of Roman cement. Parapet and blocking course. Hipped slate roof. Glazing bars intact. It originally had a porch of solid type, but this has been demolished and the doorway behind it bricked up.
