Description

Carne's Seat, located to the north of Goodwood House, is an ornamental garden building or temple constructed in 1743 by the second Duke of Richmond. It is named after an old French retainer of his grandmother, Louise de Kerouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth. The building is attributed to either Lord Burlington or possibly Roger Morris, according to Christopher Hussey. It is made of stone believed to have come from the ruins of the old Parish Church of Hove.

The structure has two storeys, with the south side featuring a projecting section topped by a pediment. The upper storey includes three round-headed windows with decorative glazing, while the lower storey has a portico with four square rusticated windows. Each side of the building is adorned with a sphinx figure on a plinth. The entrance on the north side is accessed through an Ionic porch.
