Description
Wharf Bridge is a cart bridge built around 1760, spanning the Itchen Navigation in Winchester. Constructed from multi-hued bricks, the bridge features stone coping along the parapets and is oriented east to west, currently providing pedestrian access across the former navigation.
The brick walling is mainly laid in header bond, with some areas repaired in stretcher bond. On either side, the wing walls curve outward and end in brick pillars. The broad, round-headed arch is formed by a soldier course of bricks. The stone coping displays chisel marks on the side face. The track across the bridge is narrow, likely intended for cart traffic, and has a rubble stone base with some larger stone slabs.
