Description
The Palm House, located 50 meters north of the main building at West Dean Park, is a structure dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It was likely re-roofed around 1900. The building is made of brick with a glass and iron roof and features a rectangular single vessel design with seven bays. Each bay has a two-centred headed opening that includes a mullion and transom window with Y tracery heads, divided into vertical panes. The roof is hipped at both ends, with the central ridge supported by cast-iron brackets, while the glazing bars are wooden. Each window is accompanied by two stone brackets that were intended to support orange trees during the summer months. There are similar openings with foot doors in the end walls, and later lean-to extensions have been added at the rear. Originally designed as a Palm House, it was converted into an orangery when it was re-roofed, likely by William James.
